2020 was peak hyperpop. 100gecs ran the show prior to this era, but legends of the sound like CharliXCX and Brakence really defined this era of music for myself. from their influence, we birthed troves of artists that would go on to pioneer an entirely new subculture of music.

around the same time that hyperpop hits TikTok for you pages for depressed covid kids, in a completely separate universe, Carti drops WLR and no one really likes it, but rage is reborn. Yeat is the first to really capitalize on this in the mainstream alongside with pluggnb-verse of Summrs, Autumn, Kankan, Dom, etc. Yeat's music sounds completely different, but feels horizontally shifted, proportional, and parallel to the hyperpop sound. you get new heavy-layered vocals on creative pluggnb beats which feel like a mashup of trap and glitch beats and the game is set.

pluggnb catalyzed everything. obviously, the stragglers of straight rage music like Rich Amiri and Lone who continued down the vamp/opium trajectory that have now become mainstream (entirely thanks to Yeat), but there was a new generation of creativity that sparked up mostly on the production side of things. the hot shit for a while was remixing classic pop songs on pluggnb beats (and then hard trap )and it made looking back 10 years into the past for inspiration cool again. Ice Spice blew up entirely because of this pop mashup trend with tracks like no clarity and name of love before she dropped munch. for months, it would be mostly drawing from golden era pop music, but as fashion started to converge on y2k, so did music. Soulja Boy and Speakerknockers became blueprints of swag and, subsequently, the hoodtrap and jerk sound. Nettspend, Yhapojj, Xaviersobased, YT have hit the TikTok mainstream scene with this.

all while y2k + jerk are starting to blow up the underground in mid-2023, hyperpop sounds start appearing more in mainstream rap. Lil Uzi Vert drops pinktape and everyone says its ass. TikTok rapper Che (of euphoria and agenda fame) drops a pseudo hyperpop album winning the teen fashion demon demographic which validates the sound and and draws allure from the now mainstream opium fanbase who's succubus ken carson recruits 2hollis to tour for a great chaos.

now, the mass of TikTok warriors are mixing snow strippers (had a feature on pinktape for a track that no one liked) and 100gecs and are simultaneously deciding to bite my hinge prompts by calling themselves "esoteric with niche music interests". quite unbelievable to see how peers (and myself) in high school used to make fun of other people for listening to 100gecs instead of Fetty wap, but now we've found ourselves at the beginning of hyperpop again.

ian, 2hollis, Nettspend, Yeat, Che, Carti, Ken, Lone, are all 100gecs derivative and we will converge upon the feeling of the 2020 hyperpop era once again.
